76 pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students and 36 registered nurses who earned a BSN through the RN-BSN program will walk across the Hancher Auditorium stage during the College of Nursing Fall 2023 Commencement Ceremony on December 16.

Student commencement speakers are Andrew Doromal of Hinsdale, Illinois, and In Won Heo of Iowa City, Iowa. The 2024 Outstanding Young Alumni Award winner, Monica Samples (20BSN), will give the keynote address, and Tanya Uden-Holman, associate provost for undergraduate education and dean of the University College, will give the charge to the graduates and confer degrees.

About the Speakers:

Andrew Doromal

Andrew Doromal is a 2019 graduate of Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale, Illinois. Andrew chose to study nursing because it gives his life a sense of purpose and is something he can be proud of doing.

In Won Heo

In Won Heo is a nurse in the cardiology unit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and a 2021 graduate of Kirkwood Community College. She is delighted to be a nurse and participate in the honorable work of keeping others alive, just as the healthcare professionals at UIHC did for her after a life-threatening health crisis she had 17 years ago.

Monica Samples

Monica Samples, a 2020 graduate of the College of Nursing BSN program, is currently a pediatric intensive care unit nurse at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Outside of the hospital, Monica has become a certified Infant Swimming Resource Instructor, teaching self-rescue skills to infants and children.
