The University of Iowa requires all health science students to provide documentation of the following immunizations. In addition, College of Nursing students participate in many clinical experiences and must comply with the standards agreed upon by our clinical partners. Students are expected to provide documented proof of the following health requirements upon acceptance into the College. College of Nursing contracts with DISA (Castle Branch), a service that allows students to order their own background checks online and to store all requirement documentation.
1) Criminal Background Check and Abuse Registry Checks
Ordered by student upon acceptance in to the program
2) Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR)
Must have documentation of at least one of the following:
- Two doses of Measles, Mumps & Rubella vaccines at least 28 days apart OR
- Submit lab documentation (with reference ranges) of your most recent titer for Measles, Mumps & Rubella diseases.
- If any of the 3 titer results are not positive or immune, you are required to complete a 2 dose MMR vaccine series.
3) Varicella (Chicken Pox)
- Submit documentation of 2 Varicella Vaccines (there must be 28 days between vaccine doses) OR
- Submit lab result documentation (with reference ranges) of a positive or immune Varicella titer result.
- If the titer is not positive or immune, you are required to complete a Varicella vaccine series.
4) Hepatitis B Vaccine and Titer:
- Vaccine series completed at the appropriate intervals, followed by a Hepatitis B Surface Antibody Titer. The Hepatitis B Surface Antibody Titer is REQUIRED, even if series was completed as a child.
- If the Hepatitis B Surface Antibody Titer is negative….
- If you have completed a Hepatitis B vaccine series and are unable to provide documentation of having done so, you may meet this requirement with lab documentation (with reference ranges) of a “reactive” Hepatitis B Surface Antibody Titer.
5) Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap)
Must have documentation of Tdap within 10 years
6) TB Skin Test (yearly)
There must be documentation of one of the following:
- 2-step TB skin test: The 1st test is placed with results read in 48-72 hours. The 2nd test is placed at least 7 days after the first test reading, and must be read in 48-72 hours.(documentation must include dates administered, dates read results and mm induration).
- Blood test: IGRA (Interferon Gamma Release Assay – Quantiferon Gold or T-Spot).
- If positive TB results, you must provide documentation of a clear Chest X-Ray AND a TB Assessment Form https://studenthealth.uiowa.edu/student-requirements-and-forms
- Upon renewal, a 1-step skin test or a blood test is required.
7) Influenza (due October 30th)
Must have recent (seasonal) documentation
8) Health Screening Form
Must be completed on the school form and signed by a medical professional
9) CPR Certification
Current certification in American Heart Association (Healthcare Provider). Must be renewed every 2 years.
10) Iowa RN License
Current Iowa RN License, including expiration date.
11) Liability/Malpractice Insurance
Minimum coverage of $1,000,000 coverage/single incident and $3,000,000/aggregate (provided by the College of Nursing and charged to your UBill)
12) Compliance Training
Online training courses which also include Mandatory Reporter Trainings are provided by the College of Nursing to be completed prior to matriculation.
