CROSS CULTURAL NURSING EXPERIENCE
Jamaica, West Indies
The purpose of this cross-cultural nursing experience is to introduce senior nursing students to health care as it is delivered by nurses in rural Jamaica, West Indies.
Participants will have the opportunity to provide direct nursing services to clients in a variety of settings including hospital, home, and outpatient clinics. A beginning understanding of nursing roles and responsibilities in a different culture and health care system will be gained. Workshops and debriefing excursions are planned to Port Antonio and Ocho Rios.
Applicants are advised that standards and conditions of living and studying in a third world country present unusual challenges to most U.S. students. The selection committee is seeking applicants who demonstrate exceptional motivation, tolerance for the unexpected, emotional maturity, and a willingness to tolerate a degree of physical (and psychological) discomfort.
