My research focus, goals, and objectives are to: 1) expand my current knowledge of nursing theories, paradigms, and evidence based-research with the intent to develop culturally-sensitive and innovative interventions related to the care of community-dwelling Hispanic elders with type II Diabetes Mellitus (DM); 2) develop expertise in research methodology that will promote a program of research related to a) culturally transformative interventions for Hispanic elders with type II DM living in the community, b) systems and organizations that support and maintain the use of the best clinical practice interventions, and c) educational interventions that encourage and promote the utilization of evidence- based research into the daily care of Hispanic elders; 3) enhance organizational leadership capacity in culturally congruent care for Hispanic elders with chronic illnesses; and 4) implement and develop leadership activities to further advance the care of minority elders with chronic conditions as a specialized area of nursing practice. Faculty or Clinical Research Affiliations:
Currently, I work as a Research Assistant on the newly funded University of Iowa CTSA Community Engagement Program where we oversee four Community Health Centers (CHCs) in the state of Iowa. This year, the Board Members identified and prioritized diabetes self-management as the focus of this five-year award. As the CHCs serve the majority of immigrant and minority patients in the state, we will have wide opportunity to address key health disparities and inequalities.
