Advisor:
Janet Specht, PhD, RN, FAAN
Cognate Area:
I am considering environments, perhaps with a school of architecture or landscape architecture or potentially leisure studies. I need to investigate the possibilities further.
Research Focus:
My doctoral research will focus on the concepts of biophilia and attention restoration therapy as they relate to the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, especially persons with dementia in nursing homes. This will include looking at "nature-oriented" multisensory stimulation as an integral component of nursing home care.

I am currently the project director for Dr. Janet Specht’s RO1 NINR grant, “Improving continence and pain management in LTC: The MTRAIN Intervention study”. This study works with 50 NHs in northern Iowa to promote integration and knowledge of evidence-based practices in the LTC environment for pain management and urinary incontinence. It is a longitudinal quasi-experimental study following staff, resident, and institutional outcomes over a 12 month period. It involves over 1000 staff members, and 500 NH residents and families.
