APPLYING TO GRAD SCHOOL

Applying to graduate school is a complex process; so start early. Below are some of the basics:

The Application Form. It should be completed early, accurately, and be free of typographical or grammatical errors. Have someone proofread your application to check for errors. Be consistent in providing information, especially your full, legal name. Use a typewriter to complete your application form.

The Personal Essay. Most graduate school applications require a personal essay. Typically, the applicant is asked to discuss his or her "statement of purpose." Your essay should answer specific questions posed in the application, express your enthusiasm for the field of study, your motivation, experience, maturity, and unique qualities. The essay is a key measure of your ability to communicate. Keep your essay within the limit of words required.

Transcripts. Most programs require that official copies of your transcript be sent directly from the Registrar's Office. Call 319-335-0230 for information on requesting transcripts.

Letters of Recommendation. Typically, three to five letters are requested from faculty members or employers as part of the admissions process. Those doing references should be able to evaluate your academic and personal potential. Provide information about yourself to assist them in the letter-writing process. Provide a postage-paid envelope with the proper address. Once the application process is over, a thank you note is appropriate.

Test Scores. Most schools require that students take the GRE or other standardized tests. Application Fees. Typically, application fees range from $20 to $100 per school. Many universities have an application fee waiver for applicants with financial need. Call the admissions office of the school to which you are applying to find out how you can secure a waiver.
