Title: HCCC American Cancer Society Faculty Seed Grants

Title: UIHC Department of Nursing Pilot Grants

Budget: $3,000 or less

Description:  The UI Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care’s Nursing Research & Evidence-Based Practice Committee (NREC) in collaboration with the UI College of Nursing are pleased to announce a pilot grant funding program to stimulate and advance research and evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing at UIHC.

It is expected that up to 5 proposals (2 EBP and 3 research - 1 research proposal must be a collaboration between a UI Hospitals and Clinics nurse and a UI College of Nursing faculty member) will be funded in amounts up to $3000. Only proposals that focus directly on nursing practice will be eligible for funding.  Staff nurses who wish to investigate practice ideas are highly encouraged to apply. All nurses, no matter experience level, are eligible. A mentor will be expected for nurses new to research and EBP. The staff in the NREC will help locate mentors as well as develop proposals. More resource information will be provided in the call for proposals.

Title:  American Cancer Society CBPR Grant Opportunity

Budget:  Not to exceed $100,000 for two years (including indirect costs)

Deadline:  April 1, 2012

Description: 

Studies funded by this RFA must

  • Focus on interventions to reduce health disparities.
  • Use CBPR as the research method
  • Demonstrate clear evidence of how this pilot data will be used to develop an independently funded study (e.g., NIH RO1 or ACS Research Scholar Grant) Eligibility and Cancer Site There are two different types of funding for this RFA that impact (a) the type of cancer being investigated and (b) applicant eligibility criteria.

Funding Types

Type 1 funding: ($200,000).

Any cancer site (e.g., breast, colorectal etc.) may be the focus of research. Only researchers with terminal degrees (M.D, Ph.D. or equivalent) who are U.S. citizens, at any career stage, and who work at a not-for- profit institution located in the Midwest Division of the ACS (Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin) are eligible to apply.

Principal Investigators (PIs) who are not part of an academic center or who have no externally funded research in CBPR, must engage in collaborative partnership with an academic (anywhere in the United States) with demonstrated research expertise in community-based research.      

Type 2 funding: ($200,000).

Only breast cancer may be the focus of research.

Only researchers with terminal degrees (M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent) who are U.S. citizens, at any career stage, and who work at a not-for-profit institution located in Milwaukee area are eligible to apply. Principal Investigators (PIs) who are not part of an academic center or who have no externally funded research in CBPR, must engage in collaborative partnership with an academic (anywhere in the United States) with demonstrated research expertise in community-based research.

Mechanisms of Support and Budget

Mechanism of Support: This RFA will use the Pilot and Exploratory Projects (PEP) mechanism. Complete instructions on this grant mechanism can be found here  Pilot Studies Using Community-Based Participatory Research to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities Policies and Instructions.  

Length of Study: Awards may not exceed a period of two years duration.

Budget: Budgets may not exceed $100,000 for two years (including indirect costs.) Awards: It is anticipated that a total of $400,000/year for 2 years will be available to support this RFA. Applications will be selected through the Society’s peer review system. Peer Review of Applications and Resubmission

Process: Review of applications at the ACS is a two-tiered process.

  • Step 1 - Applications will be reviewed by the CPPB (Cancer Control and Prevention Research) Peer Review Committee (PRC). Applications recommended for funding by the Peer Review Committee will be forwarded to the Council for Extramural Grants.
  • Step 2 - Council will determine which grants will be funded from all 18 Peer Review Committees after considering the relative merit of applications and available funds.  Resubmissions - Grantees may submit their applications a total of three times (i.e., original application and two resubmissions.)

Deadline: Applicants must submit their full application electronically and in paper format per guidelines on cancer.org no later than 5pm (Eastern) on April 1, 2012.

Title: UI Prevention Research Center for Rural Health Pilot Grant Program

Budget: $20,000 or less

Deadline:  February 13, 2012

Description: The primary objectives of the pilot grant program are to encourage the development of new research projects consistent with the mission of the PRC-RH and to attract new research partners to collaborate with us. The PRC-RH is particularly interested in pilot projects which concern rural contexts and that in some way engage community members.  Priority is given to pilot proposals that hold great potential for leading to a larger, externally funded research proposal. Pilot project grants will be generally limited to one year in length and a maximum cost of $20,000 (direct) for each project.

Any faculty member, research scientist, doctoral candidate or post-doctoral trainee at the University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa, or Iowa State University with an interest in conducting research on health promotion in rural settings.
