I am writing a grant.  How do I involve the ONR staff and resources?

Contact Nancy Goldsmith to discuss your plans, either by email, phone, or in person.  If you are planning an NIH application, you’ll need to send RFA or PA information as the electronic process requires the ONR to download the package specific to a particular call.  If you will be applying to a private funding source, that information will also need to be sent.

Nancy will set up the templates you will need and get them to you.  These will include all the parts of the grant that will be needed, whether for NIH or a private funding agency.  You will also receive a printout of the deadlines pertaining to your specific application type and date.

An appointment should be scheduled, by the date shown on the deadline sheet, with Nancy to begin work on the grant budget.

Send the following information to Linda Curran as soon as possible, but no later than the date shown on the deadline sheet:

•  Names of all people who will be working on the grant, including consultants
•  Role for each person named
•  Contact information for those who are not at the University of Iowa

Expand the "Grant Deadlines" link in the left menu for information about grant deadlines.

How do I work with Sponsored Programs?

The Division of Sponsored Programs is the office on campus that must approve all outgoing grant applications and will deal with all incoming awards, whether directly from the sponsoring agency or as a subcontract.  DSP staff are well versed in all stages of the grant process and stand ready to assist all Iowa faculty and staff.  Visit the DSP staff directory to determine the appropriate person for your funding agency or concern:  The directory is available at: http://research.uiowa.edu/dsp/main/?get=staffdirectory1

If you have questions for DSP, you can start by contacting Nancy Goldsmith.  Often, faculty concerns are situations we’ve seen before and already have the answers.  If not, we’ll be happy to contact DSP on your behalf.

When do I need to submit my grant application materials?

Deadlines vary by agency and funding mechanism. ONR internal deadlines are available here.

What information do I need to bring to my budget meeting?

The list below is just a start but will help assist us in figuring out the cost of your plans.  When you meet with Nancy, the template used will guide more questions.

  • Names of investigators – with percentage FTE on grant
  • Names of consultants
  • Information on other institutions, if you will have subcontract(s)
  • List of other positions (TBA) that will need to be hired in order to accomplish grant work
  • Travel needs, both professional and for data collection
  • Equipment needs – if unique, please provide some information on costs or contact information for vendors
  • Supplies
  • Costs of lab tests, if included in project
  • Anything else you can think of that you will need.
