Bachelor's for nurses considered
Panel holds closed meeting to talk about degree requirement, which some community colleges oppose

A state committee formed to discuss a proposal to require nurses in Iowa to earn a bachelor’s degree met Tuesday in closed session.

The Iowa Board of Nursing group will hold a public meeting at a future date to discuss the proposal, which would require nursing students to complete a four-year bachelor’s degree, an increase from the current two-year associate’s degree mandate.

A broad array of health care groups in recent years have recommended additional education designed to maintain quality of care.

They argue nurses increasingly coordinate care in homes and other settings outside hospitals, a responsibility that requires more than two years of education.
