Nursing has made great strides in its development as a scholarly discipline. However, nowhere is the shortage of nurse faculty and scientists more serious than in gerontological nursing. Many schools have no faculty with formal gerontological training and many who seek to strengthen gerontological curricula and research have isolated faculty in the area.

The purposes of the Regional Training Core (RTC) are to

1. strengthen and develop gerontological nursing intervention research of senior and junior scientists through collaborative relationships among faculty in the regional consortium,
2. assist faculty who participate in regional training to further enhance their skills and strategies for gerontological nursing interventions research, and
3. mentor faculty who have participated in regional training programs and opportunities to move programs of research to external funding. Key gerontological faculty at each school of nursing will provide the leadership needed in each site, supported and facilitated by the resources and activities at the Iowa Hartford Center.
