What do you do at the College of Nursing?
I am an Administrative Services Specialist in Finance & Operations. I serve as the facility coordinator for the College of Nursing Building (including liaison with custodians, painters, etc.). In this role, I prepare new office space, move or surplus furniture, distribute keys, maintain the two CON cars, etc. I also assist with special F&O projects (e.g., recycling, college art, food vendors, etc.); provide support to Faculty Practice (House Calls); and help our Accounting Manager, Carol Haack, with miscellaneous projects as needed. Additionally, I help support the operations of the Certification Center.

What did you do before you worked at the college?
After I received a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Iowa, I spent six years with UI Preventive Medicine (College of Medicine); seven years with the Division of Associated Medical Sciences (College of Medicine); a short Administrative Internship with the UI Controller; less than a year with Health Services Research and Development at the ICVA; and I’ve been here at the CON for the last 22 years.

Where did you grow up? Tell us something about your childhood/hometown.
I grew up on the South side of Iowa City. It was a rough neighborhood (in those days), but people were fair and treated each other with respect and dignity. You learned to respect those who practiced fair play and stand up to those that would try to bully and intimidate.

What is the most recent book you’ve read? Did you like it and why?
I read anything and everything that is “How To” based. From light auto mechanics, handiwork and light woodworking, to financial advice, fix it advice, etc. Basically, I like anything that is educational in nature with a practical slant. I read lots of newspapers, nationals and locals, but my current favorite is the Hawkeye Trader from Southeast Iowa.

If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Windham, Iowa, is nice this time of year. Oxford, Iowa, is also interesting to me.

What do you do away from the office? Tell us about your hobbies/volunteer activities, etc.
For 16 years, I was a volunteer coach for girls basketball and softball (early elementary to varsity).

What’s your dream car?
I’m not sure I have one. I would probably just add a power seat to my Chevy Colorado.
