Admissions & Application

The program will begin each Fall. Admission is competitive. Students must meet the following requirements to be considered for admission to the MSN-Clinical Nurse Leader program:

• Completed Graduate College application [1] form and fee
• Baccalaureate or advanced degree in Nursing and approximately two years experience
• A minimum of a 3.0 grade point average
• Complete supplemental application
• Current nursing license
• Provide a current resume/portfolio
• Computer literate
• Provide three completed recommendation forms
• Completion of pre-requisite courses by the start of the program   

An upper-level, biostatistics course needs to be completed within five (5) years of the application deadline. Acceptable University of Iowa courses are as follows: 22S:101 (STAT:3510), 22S:102 (STAT:5543), or 171:161 (BIOS:5110). Equivalent courses from other colleges will be accepted as well. We review all applicants as a cohort and do not admit on a rolling basis. 

Requirements for International Students
Due to the level of Internet-based coursework in the MSN-CNL program, international students in this program of study are not eligible to receive an I-20 form for F-1 (student) visas/immigration status. Many international students, though, will be able to receive documentation to qualify for J-1 (exchange visitors) visas/status. A minimum score of 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based or 81 iBT on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for students whose first language is not English. The University of Iowa does accept the IELTS.  We require an IELTS total score of 7.0, with no sub-score less than 6.0.  All IELTS test takers will be held to the on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation.

If admitted:

All international students will be required to take the on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation. If a student is found to need more than 2 courses in English as a Second Language, he/she will be required to enroll in, and successfully complete, the Iowa Intensive English Program. Concurrently with the Iowa Intensive English Program, the student will be allowed to register for one course within their master's program of study.  More information related to the Iowa Intensive English Program is found at the following link http://www.uiowa.edu/~iiepesl/ [4].

MSN-CNL Application Requirements

TO GRADUATE ADMISSIONS:

Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Graduate from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited nursing program

1. Completed Graduate College application [1] form and fee
2. Submit complete official transcripts for work done in all undergraduate   and graduate schools
3. International students please refer to the information above specific to you and submit accordingly.

Graduate College Admissions Application must be received prior to the College of Nursing deadline (January 3) in order to be considered for admission in the following fall semester. Send these materials to the Office of Admissions, The University of Iowa, 107 Calvin Hall, Iowa City, IA 52242-1396. The application can be submitted electronically or a hard copy may be requested via their website.
