I hope you all enjoyed the College of Nursing’s first email newsletter as we are definitely pleased with the new look. I also received positive responses from our alumni as well. It is our plan to extend updates to you on the College of Nursing about every three to four months. Kitty BuckwalterDr. Buckwalter to Receive Prestigious UI Award

Dr. Kathleen “Kitty” Buckwalter (BSN ’71, MA ’76) has been selected to receive the University of Iowa’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

Professor Emeritus Buckwalter, along with other recipients, will be recognized for this accomplishment at the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Awards luncheon and ceremony on June 9, 2012. This award is the Alumni Association’s highest honor.

Future of Nursing Summit presentation on the screenIowa Named as Action Coalition to Ensure High-Quality, Patient-Centered Health Care

Iowa has been selected as an Action Coalition by the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action, coordinated through the Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA), an initiative of AARP, the AARP Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), to ensure that all Americans have access to high-quality, patient-centered health care, with nurses contributing to the full extent of their capabilities.

The Iowa Action Coalition will work with the campaign to implement the recommendations of the landmark Institute of Medicine (IOM) report,The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health

Donna Glee Reim, a former UI College of Nursing student and instructor has found a second calling. More specifically, Glee Reim has been bit by the acting bug, working as a background actor in a number of marque films, including “Shutter Island”, “Bride Wars” and “The Invention of Lying.” She recently took time to answer a few questions from the college.

Who are Iowa’s Great Nurses?

We’ve all met at least one outstanding nurse whose courage, compassion, and commitment to the nursing profession stands out above all others. Each year, 100 Great Iowa Nurses are selected from a pool of hundreds of admirable candidates and honored by the state of Iowa, fellow nurses and community leaders.

Representing 42 different Iowa counties, this year’s 100 Great Iowa Nurses will be honored on May 6, 2012—the beginning of National Nurses Week—at a reception in the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines.
