"Earth’s Elders: The Wisdom of the World’s Oldest People" -- Nov. 12 lecture

Author and photographer Jerry Friedman spent four years on a landmark project to introduce the world to the 60 oldest people on earth. As a result, he is the only person to ever interview so many people who are on the outer edge of the human lifespan – supercentenarians, those 110 years and older.

Friedman will discuss his experiences and his book, "Earth’s Elders: The Wisdom of the World’s Oldest People," as the presenter for this year’s Woodrow W. Morris Lectureship, sponsored by The University of Iowa College of Nursing Adult and Gerontology Area of Study.

A question-and-answer period will follow.

An experience at a senior care center brought Friedman face-to-face with the disenfranchisement of the elderly population. As a result, he set out to capture portraits of the older residents, document their life stories, and give these isolated people a sense of connection to the world. His work provides an unprecedented look at the hearts, minds and spirits of these extreme elderly, and in the process, uncovers remarkable insights into health and the aging process.

From the Steppes of Mongolia, to the plains of the Midwest, Friedman has documented the common threads that connect supercentenarians and hint at the secret to their longevity. They survived and thrived, not as a result of medical advances, abundant food, modern conveniences, but due to their strength in the face of adversity, their self-reliance, tenacity, purpose and faith.

The event is made possible by a gift from Woodrow W. and Mary Anders Morris, longtime friends of the UI College of Nursing.
