School Nurse Requirements Part of Teacher Quality Law

One component of the Teacher Quality Law, which Iowa Governor Chet Culver signed into law April 26, will have an impact on school nurses. The law reinstates the requirement that every school district in Iowa have a school nurse, and that school districts must work towards a ratio of one school nurse for every 750 children.

The Iowa School Nurse Organization, including University of Iowa College of Nursing PhD student Sharon Yearous, has worked for two years to get the law passed.

School districts can request a two-year waiver but they will be required to fill these positions after this period.
