Lehmann Receives Faith and Learning Award

Susan Lehmann, MSN, RN, University of Iowa College of Nursing assistant professor (clinical), is this year’s recipient of the Geneva Lecture Series Committee’s annual Faith and Learning Award, which is presented to a member of the UI community who exemplifies the idea of combining or synthesizing his or her faith with learning or teaching.

Lehmann was presented with the award April 24, in conjunction with the Geneva Lecture presentation, for her work with the homeless and for the institution of Nurses Christian Fellowship on the UI campus.

“Sue was chosen for the award because she has been active in demonstrating her love for people in need in our community, and for her commitment to giving nursing students an opportunity to get to know people from all walks of life,” said Dr. Edward Laarman, director of the Geneva Campus Ministry. “Sue stated when she received the award that she found her love for God was best expressed through love for others, and she has certainly practiced that in a wide variety of ways.”

Lehmann’s enthusiasm for community health nursing has broadened the perspective of College of Nursing students, both in the classroom and in real-world experiences working with underserved populations in Iowa City’s community centers, homeless shelter, and the UI Mobile Clinic. She teaches undergraduates in the Public Health Nursing Practicum, and directs the Community Nurse Clinician Program. The focus of her teaching is health promotion and primary prevention for children and families, with the hope that they will integrate positive health habits early in their lives.
