College of Nursing Shines in 2008 Rankings of "America's Best Grad Schools"

U.S. News & World Report now ranks several UI College of Nursing graduate programs among the finest, as compared to public universities across the nation:

No. 1 - Nursing service administration

No. 1 - Gerontological/geriatric nursing graduate programs

No. 6 - Nurse anesthetist

No. 6 - Pediatric nurse practitioner

No. 9 - Master of Science in Nursing program

No. 11 - Family nurse practitioner

Each year, U.S. News ranks graduate programs in the areas of business, education, engineering, law, and medicine. These rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, and students. For the rankings in all five areas, indicator and opinion data come from surveys of more than 1,000 programs and nearly 9,100 academics and other professionals.

U.S.News first published a reputation-only graduate school ranking in 1987. The annual America's Best Graduate Schools report began in 1990.

"The University of Iowa strives continuously to distinguish itself academically among public universities, and rankings such as these only underscore how successful many of our colleges and programs have been at achieving excellence," UI Interim President Gary Fethke said. "The rankings are really a tribute to all the people in these programs, including the deans, department heads, faculty, staff and students. I am grateful to all of them for their efforts to make the University of Iowa distinctive."

UI Executive Vice President and Provost Michael Hogan agreed.

"Rankings like these serve as one indicator of how well we're doing as we work toward our strategic planning goals, and our aspiration to be one of the nation's top 10 public research universities," Hogan said. "The fact that so many of our graduate programs are already at or approaching top 10 status should remind us all that we're blessed with a world-class university right here in Iowa."
