Professor Sherry L. McKay, MSN, ASRNP, GNP and director of the college’s House Calls Faculty Practice unit recently authored an op-ed piece for Iowa City’s Press-Citizen.

In the article, McKay, who has many years of nursing experience in acute, long-term, and home health care—including an emphasis in Gerontology and psychiatric nursing—offers some great tips to help prevent falls, which are the leading cause of death from injury for older adults.

According to the article, “Some startling statistics demonstrate the seriousness of falls. One in three older adults falls each year. In 2010, 2.3 million nonfatal fall injuries among older adults were treated in emergency departments which led to more than 662,000 hospitalizations.”
