- An
extensive literature review and consensus paper
was recently developed by the Dementia Day Camp (DDC)Research
Group which pulls together the empirical evidence to
support non-pharmacological approaches for management of
early stage dementia. The consensus paper describes research
in the areas of exercise, cognitive stimulation, health
promotion, multi-modal programs, and a category called "other
interventions". The review resulted in an analysis
of studies conducted internationally and was multidisciplinary
in breadth. Click

- The
strengths and success of the Iowa Hartford Center
provides opportunity for synergy with the other Hartford
Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at The University
of Pennsylvania, The University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences, Oregon Health Sciences University and The University
of California at San Francisco. These collaborative initiatives
are important in addressing critical issues in the field
of aging.
Geropsych Initiative
A research consensus conference in geropsychiatric nursing
sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania and the University
of Iowa was held in the fall of 2005. This 2-day conference
was convened to bring together the current and next generations
of academic and clinical leaders in the area of GMHN to
help create solutions to this problem. A proposal is being
submitted to The John A Hartford Foundation to fund curriculum
and research development in the field of geriatric psychiatric
nursing.
Nursing Home Collaborative
Since the early 1950's, when the federal government first
required states to establish some form of licensing for
nursing homes, the nursing home industry in the United States
has grown to serve millions of people in tens of thousands
of facilities. Initially conceptualized as providing long-term
care, nursing homes have evolved over the past twenty years
to include multiple levels of care for residents. This change,
along with complex funding and regulatory structures has
created challenges for those who care for residents in nursing
homes. The HCGNE Nursing Home Collaborative was formed in
2006 to address these challenges.

In the midst of the Hartford Center's productivity are the
Hartford Pre-doctoral Scholars and Fagin Post-doctoral Fellows.
These women and men choose to apply and are selected because
of their outstanding commitment to geriatric nursing and

- Geriatrics
and the Advanced Practice Curriculum: A Series of Web-Based
Interactive Case Studies
The Geriatrics and the Advanced Practice Curriculum: A Series
of Web-Based Interactive Case Studies was developed to provide
a user-friendly way for faculty to integrate essential geriatric
nursing content into non-gerontological nurse practitioner
and clinical nurse specialist programs. However, practicing
NPs or CNSs may also find them useful as a means for updating
or adding to their geriatric knowledge base. Click
here for details.
