Edward Thompson, PhD, RN, CRNA, ARNP, FAAN
Following service in the United States Air Force, this Cincinnati, Ohio native received his BSN and Master's degrees from the University of North Dakota. The Mayo Clinic granted certification in anesthesia. The Ph.D. degree was earned from the University of Minnesota.
Following graduation from the Mayo Nurse Anesthesia Program, Dr. Thompson joined the Mayo staff in the section of Cardiac, Vascular, and Thoracic (CVT) Anesthesia and in 1981, became the chief anesthetist. Dr. Thompson headed the team which developed Mayo's computerized anesthesia record keeper that automatically charted all anesthesia-related information during over 50,000 cases from 1983 until 1998.
In 1989, Dr. Thompson was named as the second non-physician Director of the Mayo Nurse Anesthesia Program. He increased program enrollment and established the external clinical rotations. Dr. Thompson's development of the certificate program into a graduate program necessitated completion of all institutional, accreditation, and state requirements. The institution's first Master's degree in Nurse Anesthesia was awarded in 1991. Based on his leadership efforts, Dr. Thompson was awarded the Mayo School of Health-Related Sciences Faculty Service Award in 1993. Also in 1993, Dr. Thompson was designated a Scholar by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. In 1997, Dr. Thompson was recognized by the Mayo Foundation with its Outstanding Educator Award.
In May 1998, Dr. Thompson accepted the Program Director position and joint faculty appointments in the University of Iowa's College of Nursing's Systems and Practice Area of Study and in the College of Medicine's Anesthesia Department.
Research interests include anesthetic agent effects on cognition and emotion and the use of psychological instruments to optimize selection procedures for advanced education in anesthesia.
