Perle Slavik Cowen, PhD, RN

Perle Slavik Cowen Ph.D., RN is an Associate Professor in Nursing, The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa. She serves as a faculty member in the Systems and Practice Area of Study. Her primary teaching responsibility focus on child/family groups in acute or community settings and Human Development and Behavior Across the Lifespan and Nursing Research. She is also an Adjunct Patient Care Administrator, People's Memorial Hospital of Buchanan County; Adjunct Associate Director, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; and Fellow, Center for Nursing Classification and Clinical Effectiveness.

Cowen is an active researcher and writer and has several publications and computer assisted instruction modules in the areas of child maltreatment prevention and nursing interventions in families at risk for child maltreatment. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau and received the Iowa Department of Human Services Certificate of Recognition for Efforts in Prevention of Child Abuse. She serves as a consultant to the following: NIH and ADAMHA Peer Review, MNRS Peer Review, Access to Respite Care and Help (ARCH) National Resource Center, Institute for Social and Economic Development, and the State of Iowa Council on Chemically Exposed Infants. She is a member of the Healthy Families American Research Network of the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse and is the Professional Education Chairperson, Iowa Professional Society on the Abuse of Children-Chapter Organization Task Force. She has also served on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Chapter, National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse

Dr. Cowen's area of research is the prevention of child maltreatment and family violence with a focus on interventions, which improve the quality of life for at-risk families. She has been the Principal Investigator or Evaluator on over 15 research studies focusing on child maltreatment prevention. The majority of the grants have been field studies of preventive intervention programs including Crisis Nurseries, Home Health Visitors, Respite Care for Children with Developmental Disabilities, Iowa HOPES (Healthy Opportunities for Parents to Experience Success) and Nurturing Interventions for Adolescent Mothers and their Children. She is currently the PI of a $725,390 grant to prevent adolescent pregnancy among youth 9-14 in rural settings that include schools, community youth agencies and institutions housing high-risk youth.
