Dr. Brokel redesigns work processes for care delivery using technologies with evidence-based practices. She teaches nursing and health informatics and operational/management practices for the Systems and Practice Area of Study. Her research, funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, focuses on evaluating the implementation of healthcare information technologies for rural healthcare organizations.

Research interest includes the patient outcomes, nursing outcomes, and effectiveness of clinical decision support rules utilized within electronic health records and clinical information systems. She has provided ministry organizations support in research activities, outcomes analysis, and clinical transformation designs for electronic health records within the Trinity Health system. She currently practices as a parish nurse offering health education, access to health screening and other religious community interventions.
