Abstract
Nursing home quality and resident outcomes are an important area of gerontological nursing inquiry. This pilot project is proposed to conduct preliminary testing of a Quality Improvement Long Term Care Minimum Data Set (MDS) Quality Indicator (QI) feedback intervention, alone, and with nurse consultation for nursing homes, on resident outcomes. The specific interventions to be piloted are: 1) facility-specific feedback of MDS quality indicator information, including statewide benchmarked comparisons on resident outcomes, and 2) facility-specific feedback of benchmarked MDS QIs plus nurse consultation. The pilot study will use secondary data, the Missouri Minimum Data Set for Resident Assessment and Care Screening (MDS), to prepare QI reports for the feedback intervention. The specific aims of the pilot study are to: 1) assess the integrity of the quality improvement training, MDS QI feedback intervention, consultation intervention, and data management protocols; 2) compare the within nursing home and between group effects of the QI feedback intervention, consultation intervention, and no intervention on nursing home resident outcomes; and 3) estimate effect sizes for planning the nursing home sample for an application to seek funding for a large multi-site U.S. study of interventions.
