Continuing Education
Learner Designed Self Study (LDSS) is a method of developing your own plan for learning within the guidelines of the Iowa Board of Nursing rules and regulations governing continuing education in Iowa.
The Learner Designed Self Study (LDSS) referenced in Chapter 5, 655—5.3(152) f, allows the learner to apply to an Iowa Board of Nursing approved provider (such as the UI College of Nursing) for approval of one’s own, self-designed learning activity. In the process, the learner identifies an activity which will meet one of the six criteria for continuing education in Iowa and works with a registered nurse to achieve these. Ultimately, the learner takes responsibility for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating their own educational activity.
In the LDSS submission, the learner outlines the proposed activity and the following:
• The purpose for pursuing the activity
• Objectives with a description of the expected learning outcomes in behavioral terms,
• The learning experiences or activities involved in achieving the objectives,
• Learning resources identifying people, materials, and facilities to be utilized to achieve the purpose and objectives
• Timetable for completion
• Method of evaluation and anticipated number of hours for completion.
• A contract is developed between the learner and the provider that outlines the required elements for approval of the application, cost and number of contact hours to be awarded, and a time frame for completion.
Here are a few examples of potential learner designed self-study opportunities:
• Development of a new course -- Learning resources might include literature searches for development of content, consultation with experts in content area, etc.
• Research Study -- Learning resources might include literature searches, survey design, analysis of data, development of a publication
• Writing for publication -- Learning resources might include literature searches, analysis and interpretation of data, clinical insights
• Preparation of patient education or patient care materials-- Learning resources might include literature searches, development of protocols, algorithms, etc.
