Like most college students, Jessica Carroll is busy … really busy. As a UI cheerleader and full-time BSN student, her time management skills are put to the test on a daily basis.

New DNA sequencing technologies are making it easier to know more about your entire genetic blueprint and your genetic risks for medical problems. In fact, reading your genes could eventually become as common as getting an X-ray, leading to individually tailored diagnoses and treatments.

However, while these new technologies offer much promise, they also raise many questions.

McKay Pens Fall Prevention Article

Professor Sherry L. McKay, MSN, ASRNP, GNP and director of the college’s House Calls Faculty Practice unit recently authored an op-ed piece for Iowa City’s Press-Citizen.

In the article, McKay, who has many years of nursing experience in acute, long-term, and home health care—including an emphasis in Gerontology and psychiatric nursing—offers some great tips to help prevent falls, which are the leading cause of death from injury for older adults.

Alumna to Honored at CPH Symposium

Sharon (Yearous) Guthrie (BSN ’93, MSN ’99, PhD ’11) has been selected to receive the Iowa Public Health Heroes Award from the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

Dr. Guthrie has been active in the state, advocating for the health of children in schools and school nursing, and has been influential in the development of state policy for child mental health and care in schools. She will receive the award during the college’s Institute for Public Health Practice Fall Colloquium, titled “Communicating the Value of Public Health” on Thursday, November 8.

CON Student’s Research Has International Impact

When BSN student Jeannette George opted to bring her research on Sickle Cell Anemia awareness to Uganda the thought of traveling abroad alone was a little unnerving. However, looking back George considers it “the bravest decision” she ever made.
