Daack-Hirsch Featured in Gazette Article

Sandra Daack-Hirsch, PhD, RN, a clinical geneticist and assistant professor in the University of Iowa College of Nursing, was interviewed for a recent Gazette article that discussed the importance of knowing your family medical history.

Much of Daack-Hirsch’s previous clinical practice and current research focuses on genetic and environmental influences on the health of babies, and explaining these often complex issues to affected families. 

Valde Selected to Serve on National Diabetes Prevention Committee

Jill Valde, PhD, RN, associate professor (clinical) at UI’s College of Nursing has been selected to join the American Diabetes Association's Prevention Committee.

The invitation to serve on this prominent committee can be largely attributed to the notable work that Dr. Valde has done in developing a prevention program that is administered in schools across Eastern Iowa.

CON’s Daack-Hirsch Inducted as Environmental and Public Health Ambassador

A clinical geneticist and assistant professor in the University of Iowa College of Nursing is the new Environmental and Public Health Ambassador for the State Hygienic Laboratory. The Hygienic Lab recently announced that Sandra Daack-Hirsch, PhD, RN, has accepted the one-year honorary position to help raise awareness of laboratory sciences, particularly in the areas of newborn and maternal screening.

A reception honoring Dr. Daack-Hirsch and previous ambassadors was held on Monday, Oct. 22, at the Hygienic Laboratory in Coralville.

Alumnus Accepted into Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy

Chris Forcucci (BSN ’94), RN, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been accepted into the Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy (GNLA), which is presented by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). In collaboration with the John A. Hartford Foundation Centers for Geriatric Nursing Excellence, the program pairs Leadership Mentors and Fellows in a blended curriculum designed to empower nurses to effectively lead their organizations through challenging times regarding elder care.

Grant to Bolster Smith’s Research on Late Life Depression

Marianne Smith, PhD, RN, assistant professor at UI’s College of Nursing, was recently awarded a five-year Research Project Grant (R01) from the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) at the National Institute of Health (NIH).

The grant will provide more than $3 million in funding for Dr. Smith’s research project, which is titled “Improving Mood in Assisted Living Using a Cognitive Training Intervention.”
