Reyes Appointed Dean at Kirkwood

Current PhD student Jimmy Reyes has been named dean of Kirkwood Community College’s nursing department.

Reyes, who obtained his BSN, MSN and DNP degrees from the University of Iowa College of Nursing, had been serving as interim dean.

Dean Frantz Part of Inaugural AACN Leadership Program

WASHINGTON, DC – The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is pleased to announce the inaugural class of nursing deans and senior faculty leaders who have been selected to participate in the new AACN-Wharton Executive Leadership Program. CON Alumna on Hand to Assist Following Aurora Tragedy

Angie Van Lengen normally works in the labor and delivery unit at The Medical Center of Aurora (Colorado).

All that changed early Friday, July 20, when Van Lengen (BSN ’09), a native of Mason City, IA, was called on to assist in the center’s ER facility following a mass shooting in the Century Aurora16 movie theater that left 12 people dead and left 58 wounded—several still in critical condition.

Dr. Buckwalter Provides Nursing Presence in New IOM Report

Since 1983, Professor Emeritus Kathleen “Kitty” Buckwalter, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been working tirelessly to advance mental health care for older adults.

Two years ago, she was appointed to the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on the Mental Health Workforce for Geriatric Populations. During this time, Dr. Buckwalter compiled information for the newly released IOM report—“The Mental Health and Substance Use Workforce for Older Adults: In Whose Hands?”—and provided a voice for the nursing profession within the context this important documentation. 

DI Article Discusses Dr. Ramey's Research

Assistant Professor Sandra Ramey, PhD, RN, specializes in research that investigates the relationships among Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) risk factors and CVD morbidity in large law enforcements cohorts—including the Milwaukee Police Department where she studies inflammatory markers of stress as well.

The Daily Iowan recently interviewed Dr. Ramey for her involvement in a study titled "The Effect of Work Shift and Sleep Duration on Various Aspects of Police Officers' Health."

Nurse Residency Programs
A big thank you to the speakers and participants who made the July 9th meeting on nurse residencies a success.  Over 75 people attended from across the State.  Also, a very special thank you to Mercy Des Moines for providing a state-of-the-art conference room, complete with technology to support a live webinar, panel discussion and presentations.  The University of Iowa College of Nursing sponsored the refreshments.

Iowa Action Coalition: Update

Greetings!  Iowa’s Action Coalition in the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action has been moving forward since receiving approval on Feb 23rd, 2012 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and AARP.  The focus of initial Action Coalition activities has been building its infrastructure.  While some committees and work groups still need to be formed, membership on the Steering Committee and RN-BSN Articulation Task Force is described below.  However, the work of the Iowa Action Coalition will not be confined to its committees.  It will be working with a wide range o

A few weeks ago, Iowa’s crops were off to a strong start; however, it has become apparent that a prolonged heat wave can change things in a hurry—and corn isn’t the only thing that can suffer. Ongoing UI research is looking at how heat stress impacts local migrant farmworkers.

 

The summer of 2012 has been, by and large, a scorcher. Much of the country is enduring record temperatures and cumulative rainfall totals, particularly in the Midwest, are well below average.

Dr. Herr to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Keela A. Herr, PhD, RN, AGSF, FAAN, professor and associate dean for faculty at UI’s College of Nursing, was recently announced as the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient by the National Gerontological Nursing Association (NGNA).

For 25 years, Dr. Herr has been engaged in a program of research, scholarly, and professional activities focused on the problem of pain in older adults, with emphases in assessment strategies, improving practices through translation research, and end-of-life care.
