DNP Admission Requirements & Application:

 

All materials due October 1 with the exception of Anesthesia Nursing. Materials and applications for the anesthesia program are due June 1, 2011.

Tentative Interview Dates:
AGNP – 11/9/11 and 11/10/11
Health Systems – 10/26/11 and 10/27/11
FNP – 10/19/11 and 10/20/11
NNP – 10/28/11
PMHNP – 10/21/11
PNP – 10/20/11 and 10/24/11
Post-MSN-DNP – 11/7/11

DNP Admission Requirements
Interested DNP candidates for 2011 application cycle: Be advised that an upper-level, biostatistics course needs to be completed within five (5) years of the upcoming application deadline. Acceptable University of Iowa courses are as follows: 22S:101 (STAT:3510), 07P:143 (PSQF:5143) 22S:102 (STAT:5543), or 171:161 (BIOS:5110). Equivalent courses from other colleges will be accepted as well. Please use the Transfer Courses section of ISIS to find equivalents (http://isis6.uiowa.edu/isis/courses/search.page)

Persons may enter a program of study for the Doctor of Nursing Practice with a bachelor's or master's degree in nursing or a RN with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree.

Applicants that do not have a BSN must complete an undergraduate research and a community health course prior to the application deadline.

A. General Admission Requirements
The following requirements must be fulfilled for admission to either the post-master's DNP or BSN-DNP programs:

  • Completion of an accredited basic nursing program
  • Current license to practice nursing (Special license for international students) prior to the start of classes

TO GRADUATE ADMISSIONS:

  1. Completed Graduate College Admissions application form and fee

    Undergraduate/Graduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

    Graduate from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited nursing program

    (The GRE is no longer required.)

  2. Submit complete official transcripts for work done in all undergraduate and graduate schools (University of Iowa transcripts do not need to be provided)
  3. International students please refer to the information specific to you below and submit accordingly

Graduate Admissions Application must be submitted prior to the College of Nursing deadline (October 1) in order to be considered for admission. Full-time study begins in the following summer semester, and part-time begins the following fall semester. The application can be submitted electronically or a hard copy may be requested via the website.

TO THE COLLEGE OF NURSING:

  1. Supplemental application form including: Goal Statement, Course Completion form (if applicable) and Statement of Disclosure
  2. Transcripts (we will accept unofficial or student copies)
  3. Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume
  4. Copy of RN license
  5. Three (3) professional recommendations (University of Iowa recommendation forms required).  Recommendation to be sent electronically by appraiser to nursing-graduateprogram@uiowa.edu or via hard copy in sealed business-sized envelope with appraiser's signature across the flap.

In addition to the above application requirements given your entry status:

B. Requirements Specifically for Master's-Prepared Advanced Practice Nurses

  • MSN in a recognized ARNP specialty
  • Copy of certification card
  • Graduates from NP programs other than University of Iowa must provide verification on clinical hours from the director of their NP program

C. Requirements Specifically for Master's-Prepared Students

  • A minimum of one graduate-level, 3-semester-hour course in research or evidence-based practice

D. Requirements Specifically for BSN-Prepared Students

  • Successful completion of an upper-division course in statistics

E. Requirements for International Students

A minimum score of 550 paper-based, 213 computer-based or 81 iBT on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for students whose first language is not English.

The University of Iowa does accept the IELTS. We require an IELTS total score of 7.0, with no sub-score less than 6.0. All IELTS test takers will be held to the on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation.

If admitted
All international students will be required to take the on-campus English Proficiency Evaluation. If a student is found to need more than 2 courses in English as a Second Language, he/she will be required to enroll in, and successfully complete, the Iowa Intensive English Program. Concurrently with the Iowa Intensive English Program, the student will be allowed to register for one course within their doctoral program of study. International students are required to take the CGFNS examination.

The CGFNS examination is offered in 37 locations in 26 countries.
