Mildred Wright Nursing Scholarship Fund

This fund was established through a bequest from Mrs. Mildred G. Wright. Mrs. Wright served the state of Iowa for 24 years as a teacher, social worker, and Calhoun County Welfare Director. Though not a college graduate (she graduated from “Normal School” and attended summer sessions at Iowa State Teacher's College for two years as well as taking a class at UI), she took great pride in providing monetary support toward the education of many of her nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wright was fifth of 13 children in her family but had no children of her own. She had hoped to set up a family-managed scholarship fund, but found that impractical due to the large number of family members. Her sister, Dorothy Lovely, was a former UI Foundation accounting employee, and she encouraged Mildred to make her bequest for scholarships to the UI. It is believed that she selected the College of Nursing because she had received such good care from nurses during the years when her health was declining, and she wanted to support the fine people who chose this occupation. Mrs. Wright passed away July 5, 1995.
