Scholarship Support

Each fall and spring the Scholarship and Scholastic Committee in the College of Nusing awards many scholarships to students based on various criteria such as class year, program of study, scholastic achievement, area of professional interest, or demonstration of financial need.  Last year we awarded over 25 scholarships to 100+ students for a distribution of more than $400,000 in scholarship aid.

The following scholarships are made available by the generosity of our alumni, friends, benefactors and donors:

The ASOON Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be a junior or senior in the College of Nursing with at least one semester left; financial need and academic merit must be demonstrated. The recipient will also need to demonstrate professional promise and leadership skills. The ASOONs (The American Society of Old Nurses) who established this fund, are six alumni who formed a lifetime of friendship after their student days in the College of Nursing at The University of Iowa. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

B.W. "Wayne" Carpenter and Harriet Brown Carpenter Scholarship Fund
The applicant will be a graduate student in the College of Nursing who demonstrates financial need and scholastic ability.

Ruth Frederick Dunlap Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: undergraduate student from Iowa who demonstrates financial need. The same student should receive the award each year unless they are no longer enrolled or are not in good academic standing with the College of Nursing. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Lu Ann And Norma L. Gerlach Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: be admitted to and enrolled in the first year of nursing coursework; show professional promise; have financial need; and demonstrate scholarship. Mr. Gene Gerlach, the late Mrs. Norma Gerlach, Mr. Gary Gerlach and his wife Karen Connor established and continue to support this award in memory of Lu Ann Gerlach, a former student in the College of Nursing. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Ida Lee Goodsell Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: be a senior undergraduate or graduate student expecting to complete studies by the end of the following semester . Student must have interest in pediatrics. The late Samuel and Grace Goodsell established this award in memory of their daughter Ida Lee. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Lola Lindsey Student Award Memorial Fund
Eligibility criteria: be a graduate student in the College of Nursing; have financial need; and demonstrate professional promise. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Evelyn McCann Student Financial Aid Fund
Eligibility criteria: be an undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Nursing; must demonstrate financial need and scholastic ability. This scholarship was established by the late Miss Evelyn McCann of West Liberty, Iowa. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Byron and Flora Mueller Nursing Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: financial need, scholastic ability and plan to be enrolled in the College of Nursing the following semester. This scholarship was established by the late Dr. Byron and Mrs. Flor Mueller of La Harpe, Illinois. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Anna Overland Nursing Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be a full-time graduate or undergraduate University of Iowa College of Nursing student who has designated maternal and/or child health nursing as a clinical specialization focus. The recipient will be a U.S. citizen, with a preference given to Iowa residents. The recipient must have a meritorious academic record. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

F. Preston and Lois Reed Nursing Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: to be awarded to a UIHC nursing department employee enrolled in the RN-BSN or the RN-MSN program, who demonstrates financial need and professional promise. This scholarship was established in memory of F. Preston and Lois Ayers Reed. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

RN-BSN Distance Education Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: must be an associate degree or diploma graduate nurse and be enrolled in the College of Nursing RN-BSN Progression Program at a distant satellite center site. The applicant must demonstrate financial need and show academic and professional promise. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Illeen M. Rohling Nursing Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: students who demonstrate academic merit and show financial need, with preference given to students from Muscatine County. May be renewable provided the selected student(s) satisfy the appropriate acacemic standards and continues to demonstrate need. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

John W. & Mabel Gottburg Schoen Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: undergraduate (juniors and seniors) in the College of Nursing with one semester remaining and the desire to excel in the nursing profession. There are four awards; two for junior students and two for senior students. Must have a GPA of 2.75 or above. Applicants must also demonstrate leadership abilities and ethical qualities. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Shirley Shoup Reihman Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be a full-time College of Nursing student (at any level) demonstrating financial need. Recipients of the scholarship may apply for continuing support but are not automatically guaranteed multiple-year awards. This scholarship was established by a gift from Harold and Shirley Reihman. Shirley is an alumnus of the College of Nursing, Class of 1951. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

The Juanita Watters PEO-Chapter AH Nursing Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: preference will be given to a junior or senior student from West Liberty School District and/or a student from Muscatine County in Iowa. If there are no applicants from this area, students from the state of Iowa will be considered. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

The Eugene and Elsie Weyler Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: undergraduate in the College of Nursing; in the upper 30 percent of academic class; U.S. citizen; financial need; demonstrate a caring attitude; demonstrate professional promise through skills and attitude; whenever possible have campus and community involvement. Three awards are to be given. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Darlene Wheeler Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: academic merit, financial need and be at least a junior in the College of Nursing. Preference in awarding the scholarship will be given to students who are working and interested in the area of gerontology. The scholarship can be awarded to the previous year's recipient as long as the student continues to meet the established criteria for the award. This scholarship has been established with a gift from Darlene L. Wheeler. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Pearl Zemlicka Memorial Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: be a practicing nurse who is continuing his/her education toward a Bachelor of Science or Master's degree in nursing. Individuals must demonstrate financial need; be academically qualified and reflect those attributes held by Pearl Zemlicka, including a high regard for the nursing profession and interest in lifelong learning. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Norma Adams Memorial Scholarship Award
Eligibility criteria: be in the second or third semester of the College of Nursing; be an Iowa resident; demonstrate promise of high achievement in chosen profession; possess qualities of character and personality which will enhance those skills; demonstrate dedication and enthusiasm to profession through volunteer work in a health care related setting. Funds for this award are provided by The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Volunteer Program in memory of Norma Adams, a former director of the program. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Ellen L. Anderson Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be a student in the College of Nursing, with preference being given to undergraduate students from Iowa. Recipients will be selected solely on the basis of financial need. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

The Edna S. Antes and Margaret Stephen Schreckengast Scholarship Fund in Pediatric Nursing
Eligibility criteria: be a graduating senior with undergraduate nursing degree from The University of Iowa, who has designated child health as a clinical specialization focus for future graduate study. The recipeint must enroll in such a program at the school of his/her choice within two years of receiving the BSN; be a U.S. Citizen, preferably an Iowa resident; have a meritorious undergraduate record. At the time of enrollment in graduate studies (Pediatric Nursing), the award will be transferred to the student's account. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Corinne Bowe Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: be an undergraduate in the College of Nursing with at least one semester left; have financial need; and demonstrate professional promise. Funding for this scholarship is being provided by the estate of Corinne A. Bowe, a 1940 graduate of the College of Nursing. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Grace Keeffer Clark Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: must have completed the first year in the College of Nursing, have one year of course work remaining, and be a full-time student. Selection is based primarily on financial need. Other criteria considered are grade point and professional promise. Private support for this scholarship is being provided from the will of Mrs. Grace Keeffer Clark (GN '32). Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Class of 1940 Nursing Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be an undergraduate (preferably from Iowa) who has successfully completed the first semester in the College of Nursing, have financial need and demonstrate leadership ability. This award was established by members of the Class of 1940. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Susan K. Code Nursing Scholarship Fund
The applicant must be an undergraduate student in the College of Nursing who demonstrates financial need and have accomplishments in civic activities. In addition, the student must have at least a minimum College of Nurisng grade point average of 3.0. Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded annually.

Lloyd and Gladys Burr Cunningham Nursing Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: undergraduate (preferably from Iowa) who demonstrates financial need. This award, established by Mary J. Zender in memory of her parents, Lloyd and Gladys Cunningham. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Zenobia Tams Gibson Memorial Award
Eligibility criteria: enrollment in the Community Health Nursing MSN program, preferably with a BSN from The Unviersity fo Iowa College of Nursing. This award was established by Byrdice A. Tams Schroeder in memory of her sister. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Hearst Foundation Nursing Scholarship for Underrepresented Groups
Eligibility criteria: be an underrepresented student in the College of Nursing. Students must show financial need and be academically qualified. The Hearst Scholar has responsibility for meeting leadership expectations and contributing to the College of Nursing community. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Eloise Z. Leinfelder Fellowship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be a graduate student and demonstrate financial need. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

The Ruth and Leonard Malmanger Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be a full-time student who has completed their first year. Financial need is the most important criterion, and the student must also demonstrate high scholastic ability and a caring attitude. To retain this scholarship, or renew, the recipient must continue to meet the criteria. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Florence Maytum Memorial Nursing Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: undergraduate, northwest Iowa student with good academic standing. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Peterson Nursing Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: students who demonstrate academic merit and financial need. Preference will be given to students from Iowa. Students may re-apply for this scholarship. This scholarship was established by Susan Peterson Mann, a nursing alumni (1963 BSN) and member of the Nursing Centennial Campaign Advisory Committee. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Alice Skedine Relihan Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be an undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Nursing; have financial need; and demonstrate professional promise. Preference is given to any graduate of Marion High School, Marion, Iowa. Students must maintain the criteria as identified to receive the 2nd semester of support. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Sloan Scholarship
Eligibility criteria: be an undergraduate in the third or fourth semester in the College of Nursing, who demonstrates professional promise; academic achievement; financial need; and involvement in service activities. This gift was established by Carol Citty, a University of Iowa College of Nursing graduate, and her parents, Mr. N.C. Sloan and the late Mrs. N.C. Sloan. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

John Teefy Memorial Scholarship Award
Eligibility criteria: be an undergraduate in the College of Nursing with at least one semester remaining before graduation, and demonstrates financial need and professional promise. This award was established in 1971 by Inez L. Teefy Ravell in memory of her husband, John K. Teefy. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Grace Wormer A.N.S. Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be an undergraduate in the College of Nursing; have financial need; demonstrate professional promise. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Mildred Wright Nursing Scholarship Fund
Eligibility criteria: be an undergraduate in the College of Nursing; have financial need; and demonstrate professional promise. Amount dependent upon availability of funds.

Dr. G.P. Reed Master's in Nursing Health Practice Scholarship

Eligibility criteria: students in the MNHP or MSN:CNL program.  This scholarship is in memory of the grandfather of Dr. Reed Benhamou, Dr. G.P. Reed.  Dr. Paul Benhamou also supports the scholarship program.
