College of Nursing Alumni Weekend festivities June 6-7 celebrated the reunion of the classes of 1952, 1958, 1962 and 1968.

Friday, June 6, the alumni groups toured the Nursing Clinical Education Center and its high-tech simulation lab, the Montoya Research Suite, and the Center for Nursing Classification. They enjoyed a Saturday morning breakfast in the College

At a Saturday evening banquet, four individuals who have made significant contributions to the nursing profession were honored: alumni Barbara Zoeller and Loah Stallard; College of Nursing professor emerita Martha Craft-Rosenberg; and Governor Chet Culver.

Barbara Zoeller, BSN 71, MA 76, RN, was honored with the Distinguished Achievement in Nursing Award, which celebrates those who have significantly contributed to the advancement of the academic mission in the nursing profession.

Recipient of the Distinguished Achievement in Nursing Award was Leah Stallard, BSN 55, MN, MPA, RN. The award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of the service mission of the nursing profession. Stallard was recognized her for her service in public health.

Martha Craft-Rosenberg, BSN 70, MA 78, PhD 85 (UI College of Education), RN, FAAN, was presented with the Myrtle K. Aydelotte Dean’s Award, named for the first dean of The University of Iowa College of Nursing. Gov. Culver is the 2008 recipient of the Woodrow W. Morris Friend of Nursing Award, which recognizes individuals who have championed the profession of nursing through the support of the College of Nursing. Early this year, Gov. Culver created a nursing task force to address the challenges facing Iowa’s nurses, such as low wages and a worker shortage.

June 8-10

The College of Nursing welcomed back the classes of 1954, 1957, 1962 and 1967 with a full schedule of activities for the weekend. Friday started out with a tour of the Nursing Building, followed by lunch at the college, and a tour of the Nursing Clinical Education Center at The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Guests were impressed by the advancements in clinical training, and reminisced about the different methods used in their day.

Saturday morning began with a breakfast at the College, where Interim Dean Craft-Rosenberg gave a state of the college address, and Woodrow Morris "knighted" a new Friend of Nursing, Congressman Dave Loebsack (see Awards page of the website for more on the Friend of Nursing and other Alumni Awards).

The college's events were wrapped up Saturday evening with the annual Alumni Awards Banquet at the 2nd Floor Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union. Classes were gathered to have their photographs taken before dinner.

Following dinner, the college presented the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service to Terry Wicks (BSN'81) for his commitment to students and to professional service. Dr. Joanne Herman (MSN'75) received the Alumni Award for Distinguished Achievement for her commitment to theory, clinical reasoning and nursing scholarship. Karen Martin was also present to accept the Distinguished Achievement for which she was named last year, but was unable to accept due to travel out of the country.
