SALLY MATHIS HARTWIG

Sally Mathis Hartwig (BSN 1975, MA 1977) retired as director of nursing and patient services at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics - twice.

Heading the teaching hospital's nursing service from 1979 to 1993, Hartwig continued as an associate director of the hospital until 1995, when she retired for the first time. But in 1999 she agreed to direct the service on an interim basis through a leadership transition.

Hartwig came to the UI in 1971 as assistant director of nursing at Oakdale Hospital. While she was director of nurisng at the UIHC, the number of registered nurses on staff rose to more than 1,500 and the nursing service adapted to the trend toward greater use of outpatient care for everything from diagnostic procedures to minor surgery. During her stint as interim director, Hartwig helped finalize and implement a new policy permitting registered nurses on the UIHC staff to receive full reimbursement to complete their BSN degree in one year through the College of Nursing's RN-BSN Progression program.

The College has an endowed professorship named in Hartwig's honor. The Sally Mathis Hartwig Endowed Professorship in Gerontological Nursing Research recognizes her many years of service in nursing and is the first faculty position endowed jointly by the UIHC and the College of Nursing.
