Ruth Frederick Dunlap Scholarship

Mary Dunlap Smith of Columbia , Missouri created this scholarship in memory of her late mother, Ruth Frederick Dunlap, a 1921 graduate of the UI College of Nursing.

Following high school graduation in 1914, Dunlap taught in a rural Iowa school to earn money for college. After graduating from the UI, she worked at the University Hospitals until her marriage to Hugh Allen Dunlap in 1926. She returned to nursing after raising her family and was in demand as a private-duty nurse at University Hospitals and Mercy Hospital . She died in 1953 at the age of 57.

Mary Dunlap Smith said she is very happy that her gift will translate into opportunities for nursing students and that the scholarship provides a perfect means for her to honor and recognize her mother.
