The ASOON Scholarship Fund

Eligibility Criteria: 

A junior or senior in the College of Nursing with at least one semester left; financial need and academic merit must be demonstrated. The recipient will also need to demonstrate professional promise and leadership skills.

Description: 

The ASOONs (The American Society of Old Nurses) who established this fund are six alumni who formed a lifetime of friendship after their student days in the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa.

This inspiring long-term friendship has only deepened it's connection over the years since the women graduated in 1957.

One bond among ASOON members and their husbands has been their interest in supporting programs of the University of Iowa . When Harriete L. (Brody) Verhille of Rock Island, Illinois, died in 1995, the others decided to commemorate their long friendship by establishing a scholarship fund. “When Harriete passed away, creating a scholarship seemed like a nice memorial to her,” said Betty Lou (Boyer) Verhille.

Members of ASOON include Jean R. (Rinker) Fuller of Dallas, Texas; Karen E. (Robertson) Klontz of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Jane Eloise (Weir) Ramseyer of Palos Verdes, California; Virginia K. (Taylor) Sherk of Phoenix, Arizona; Betty Lou (Boyer) Verhille of Solon, Iowa; and Harriete L. (Brody) Verhille (In Memoriam).
