Description:

The Norma Adams Scholarship Fund was established by the Volunteer Program (currently named Volunteer Services) with the University of Iowa Foundation in February 1981 as a acknowledgment of the contribution of Norma Adams, the first director of the program.

The volunteers made the original gift from volunteer earnings with an additional donation in January 1982. As a tribute to the late Mrs. Norma Adams (GN 1951) who served in that role from 1973 until her death in 1981, her volunteer colleagues established this scholarship to be awarded annually to students pursuing careers in the health professions.

For many years the students applied directly to Volunteer Services by completing an application form and an essay. A volunteer committee met to review the applications and select a recipient. In 1998 the responsibility for the selection of individuals was placed with the respective Colleges of Nursing, Medicine, and Dentistry. Although this change has occurred, the Volunteer Services of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics provides the financial support for the scholarship in memory of Norma Adams, a former director of the program and an alumnus of the College of Nursing at the University of Iowa.
