Young Nurse Clinician Programs

Young Pediatric Nurse Clinician Program

The Nursing Young Pediatric Clinician Program (YPNCP) is a 1-3 year mentored program for undergraduate nursing students. YPNC students are integrated into the ongoing undergraduate nursing program under the direction of a faculty mentor and expert pediatric nurse clinicians. This
unique opportunity is open to all undergraduate and RN-BSN students
who qualify.

What will be expected of me as a YPNC?
• Participation in practicum experiences (averaging 1-2 hrs/week)
that incorporate children in a variety of clinical settings under the direction
of a faculty mentor and expert clinician(s).

• Monthly summary of practicum experience to be turned into the faculty mentor.

• Completion of a project on a topic of interest and importance to
pediatric nursing practice. You will be expected to develop and present a poster related to your project in the College of Nursing at an event showcasing the program.

• Participation in interdisciplinary Pediatric Grand Rounds at least once
per semester with written summary of presentation.

• Attendance at the annual Pediatric Conference sponsored by UIHC
and/or a regional or national pediatric conference.

What benefits will I receive?

to the annual UIHC Pediatric Conference and/or approved regional
or national pediatric conferences.

• The option of registering for Independent Study or Honors
Independent Study for up to 3 credits toward graduation.

• Copies of selected pediatric texts and /or resources, including a subscription to the Journal of Pediatric Nursing.

• Paid membership to the Society of Pediatric Nursing (if you attend the
SPN National conference.)

• A valuable and unique clinical honor to your curriculum vita.

• Opportunities to learn and practice leadership skills in pediatric nursing.

• Opportunity to attend PNP or graduate class(es) in pediatric nursing.

• Invitation to Parent Child and Family faculty social functions such
as Nurse of the Year Banquet.

• Opportunity to attend Parent Child and Family Area presentations of
interest.

• Special recognition at graduation.

• Certificate of Pediatric Clinical Practicum Excellence.

• Identification of a network of potential employers.

Who will be my mentor?
You will be paired with a faculty mentor and expert clinician(s) who match most closely your clinical interests and professional goals.

How do I apply?
The YPNC application consists of the following items:

• Have completed Complex Concepts and Core Clinical Practicum 96:135,
& 96:136.

• Copy of most recent transcript: Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher,
good academic standing.

• Goal statement (no longer than one page) describing your
clinical interests and professional goals as they relate to pediatric nursing, and your reason for interest in the YPNCP.

• Two (2) endorsements from faculty or other health care professionals,
confirming your potential for a successful career and clinical leadership
in pediatric nursing.


APPLICATION DEADLINES


November 1 for spring enrollment in the YPNC program
April 1 for fall enrollment in the program
