Adult / Gerontological Health Nursing
For students who choose to be certified as clinical specialists or advanced practice nurses in the area of gerontological nursing. Care of adults and the elderly are combined, and emphasis is placed on chronic illness. Graduates are eligible to write the certification examination as a Clinical Specialist in Gerontological Nursing and/or Clinical Specialist in Adult Nursing (ANCC).

Anesthesia Nursing
Prepare for nurse anesthetist career entry, with exposure to provision of service in rural areas. Graduates are eligible to write the certification examination to qualify them as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

Child Health Nursing
Focus is on the assessment and management of children with chronic health conditions and their families. Courses include content on physiology, health assessment, health promotion, pharmacology, family adaptation, and child psychosocial, developmental, and physiological adjustment to chronic conditions. Clinical experiences occur in inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. Although certification as a Clinical Specialist in Pediatrics is not yet established, this program provides clinical experience in anticipation of future certification.

Community Health Nursing
Prepare for work with individuals, families, and groups in community settings with emphasis on health promotion and responses to illness. Health promotion, health maintenance, health education, coordination and continuity of care are utilized in a holistic approach to the family, group, and individual. Graduates are eligible to write the certification examination as a clinical specialist in Community Health (ANCC).

Nurse Educator (Basic)
Are you passionate about providing quality patient care? Do you enjoy sharing your knowledge with others? If so, you may be just the person we are looking for to become a Nurse Educator.
This clinical focus will provide you with opportunities to learn about the roles and responsibilities associated with being a Nurse Educator - from development/revision of curriculum to facilitating student learning in the classroom, online, in the laboratory and in the clinical environment. Round out your plan of study by working with your advisor to identify selective courses that will provide you with the skill set to function in this role.

Genetics Nursing
Learn to provide nursing care to individuals, families, and communities with known genetic conditions and/or birth defects. Master's students who are interested in an education focus may combine their clinical focus interest with courses on the educational process. For example a student interested in teaching Gerontological Nursing would combine the Gerontological Nursing Core courses with the Nursing Education Core courses.

The joint program of the Colleges of Nursing and Business Administration is designed for students with previous clinical and administrative experience. Students must be accepted for graduate study in both colleges.

Nurse Practitioner
Pediatric, Adult/Gerontological, Family, and Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
NP's work in clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, HMO's, private industry, or their own offices. They emphasize health promotion, disease prevention, and early detection and management of chronic health problems. NP's conduct physical exams, take medical histories, diagnose and treat common acute minor illnesses and injuries, order and interpret lab tests and X-rays, and in Iowa, prescribe medications. Graduates are eligible to write certification examinations to qualify them as nurse practitioners in their specialty (ANCC).

Occupational Health Nursing
Focus is on providing nursing care in the work place. In cooperation with the College of Public Health, students will learn about industrial hygiene, safety policy and regulation, hazard and safety assessment, toxicology, ergonomics, and the clinical management of occupational illnesses. Specialized courses specific to case management, injury prevention, and agricultural health. Ask about special funding from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for tuition assistance (part-time and full-time study) and monthly stipends (for full-time students only).
