HOW TO TRANSFORM YOUR MNHP INTO AN MSN DEGREE

With the addition of further coursework, the Master of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP) degree has been transitioned from a professional masters to an academic masters degree – the Master of Science in Nursing: Clinical Nurse Leader degree.

If you have earned the MNHP, we invite you to complete the requirements for this Master of Science in Nursing degree.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long is this transition opportunity open to MNHP alumni?

The option will be available for enrollment only until Fall of 2011. If you have not begun coursework to complete the transition to the MSN degree by Fall of 2011, you will have to apply for admission to the Graduate College and complete the traditional Master of Science in Nursing degree program.

Why should I consider earning this degree?
An MSN degree will open up greater opportunities for leadership roles and higher earnings. It is also the first step to earning a PhD or the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree.

What additional coursework do I need to complete?

173:140   Epidemiology I: Principles                          3 s.h.

096:208   Leadership for Advanced Nursing Practice   3 s.h.

096:209   Health Systems, Economics, and Policy       3 s.h.

096:263   Informatics in Health Care                         3 s.h.

096:266   Advanced Case Management                     3 s.h.

096:XXX  Masters Portfolio                                       0 s.h.

Are any of the courses offered online?

Yes! This should help you to work towards the MSN and have some flexibility in your schedule.

All but the Masters Portfolio and the Advanced Case Management course can be accomplished online. All course work must be completed at The University of Iowa.

What does completing a Masters Portfolio entail?
You will be assigned a faculty advisor by the Graduate Programs staff who will guide you in development of your Masters Portfolio. Information about the requirements and process for the Masters Portfolio can be found in the Graduate Student Handbook

I’ve already completed some coursework elsewhere. Will it count toward the MSN: CNL?
Transfer course work will not be accepted for completion of the Master of Science in Nursing. The Graduate College typically requires a minimum of 24 semester hours to be completed in residence as a student within their College. They have already granted an exception to this rule; therefore, no transfer courses are permitted.

Where do I begin?

First, apply to the Graduate College as a “first time applicant.” (Your MNHP degree was granted by the College of Nursing, not the Graduate College.)

As you click through the links, remember as you make your choices that you are not changing your status, you are not a returning graduate and professional student, and you are not re-entering a program. You are a brand new graduate student.

As your intended degree objective, signify “MSN.” When the application asks you for your sub-area of interest or specialization you will insert “MSN: CNL.” This will ensure that the application is routed to the correct persons.

Do I need to submit a statement of purpose or recommendation forms?

No. We already have this information on file from your prior application.

Do I need to obtain transcripts?

The Graduate College requires official transcripts for all coursework completed by the student.  For MNHP alumni, only official transcripts need to be sent for coursework that you have completed at another institution since completing your MNHP degree at Iowa. All prior official transcripts are still on file at the University. (Please note, even though you may have completed graduate level course work at another institution after graduation, this course work will not be applied to this transitional program.)

What is the application deadline?
You apply to the Graduate College at any time and indicate the session you would like to begin study. They will then make contact with us and we will develop a plan of study.

What happens after I submit my application?

After the application is processed, you will receive official notification from the Office of Admissions when you are admitted to the Graduate College.

Then you should contact Linda Myers (linda-myers@uiowa.edu) in the Office of Student Services to create your plan to complete the required coursework.
