E-Learning/Distance Education Opportunities in the College of Nursing
The College of Nursing offers a growing array of e-learning opportunities and is committed to increasing access to nursing education while maintaining the excellence that has been at the center of Iowa 's tradition.
Taking advantage of a variety of web-based instructional technologies, flexibly scheduled courses are offered by the College of Nursing in cooperation with the University's Center for Credit Programs. An online registration form and additional information regarding other E-Learning/distance education offerings, registration deadlines, billing, etc is available at http://www.continuetolearn.uiowa.edu/ccp/de/de.htm .
Online Courses. Courses marked "WWW" are essentially online. In courses requiring synchronous online experiences for small groups or whole classes, dates and times are posted as soon as possible. In courses requiring face-to-face experiences in a specific site, locations and dates are posted as soon as possible. In both cases, students are encouraged to contact course faculty to negotiate timing conflicts or to make arrangements for alternate locations or adaptations to learning experiences.
Videoconferencing. The College of Nursing and Center for Credit Programs have made extensive use of the fiber-optic Iowa Communications Network (ICN) as well as web-based videoconferencing technologies such as PolyCom. We are particularly pleased to include among our faculty and students course participants who are able to adjust their personal schedules across national and international time zones to be available for synchronous discussion.
Guided Independent Study. Courses marked "GIS" offer significant scheduling flexibility. Because these courses are not semester-based, there is no cohort learning group. Successful learners in this study mode tend to be self-directed and comfortable with intensive print-based study.
Pre-Licensure Programs
The BSN and Entry into Practice MSN - Clinical Nurse Leader are programs that are essentially residential, requiring intensive practicum experiences under the guidance of faculty and preceptors. Although most learning experiences continue to occur in the traditional classroom, lab, and clinical formats, program faculty are committed to developing web-supported opportunities for nursing electives where students explore specific populations and roles and participate in interdisciplinary experiences that will help to prepare them for the complexities of health care delivery today.
The Advising Office for Pre-Licensure Students maintains information about nursing electives and is available to assist students in registering for courses that meet students' interest, goals, and schedules.
RN-BSN Program

MSN Programs
Advisors in the Graduate Program Office are available to talk with prospective MSN students about developing a plan of study that will address personal and professional goals, including a 33 semester hour MSN that includes, core, special emphasis, electives, thesis, project or portfolio.
All MSN students enroll in the MSN core courses, which are offered online at least once per academic year. Depending on the student's choice of program, it may be possible to take much of the remainder of the program online or via alternative e-learning technologies such as Polycom, as arranged with the Graduate Program office and individual faculty members.
MSN programs primarily available in e-learning formats:
