Nursing Systems Administration Certificate

A 15 credit hour post-baccalaureate certificate program in nursing systems administration at the University of Iowa College of Nursing has been offered since Fall, 2002. The certificate program helps to meet the need in Iowa and elsewhere for nurse leaders. This certificate program composed of graduate level courses will be available for three groups of students:

  • those who have obtained a master's degree in the past and wish to update their knowledge,
  • current master's degree practicum students and current doctoral students in other focal areas who wish to obtain some administrative course work, and
  • nurses with baccalaureate degrees who wish to complete an administrative certificate program as special students.

The courses included in the certificate program are part of the University of Iowa College of Nursing master's program that is approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Completion of the certificate program will also help to make the participants eligible for basic certification in nursing administration by the American Nurses Association by giving them the contact hours of continuing education that is required. In lieu of a master's degree, certification is desirable to compete for or maintain an administrative position.
