Our Diversity

The University of Iowa College of Nursing is committed to creating an accessible, supportive environment for individuals from racial/ethnic groups and cultural backgrounds historically under-represented within the nursing community, including but not limited to, men, persons of color, individuals with disabilities, and those educationally and/or economically disadvantaged.

We continually strive to admit and educate a diverse student body – as well as to enlist a diverse faculty. We firmly believe that an atmosphere which embraces diversity enhances the educational experience and provides students with a richer understanding of our world.

The Office of Diversity at the College of Nursing is also engaged in ongoing efforts to ensure our curriculum prepares students to be culturally competent. As nurses, we know patients are more likely to accept health information when it is communicated in a way that is consistent with the person’s culture. Cultural competence will prepare our future nurses to effectively meet the health needs of our nation’s ever-changing population.
