Community Outreach Activities
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program
In response to the need for consistent, sensitive treatment of sexual assault victims, The UI College of Nursing, along with community partners, created the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) training program and the Sexual Assault Response Team.
Workshops are held twice a year to train and nurses certify nurses as SANES.
The course is taught by nationally recognized nurse leader and pioneer in the field, Dr. Linda Ledray. College of Nursing faculty, law enforcement and attorneys provide additional presentations.
Training includes the collection of evidence, chain of custody and tips for testifying in court. For workshop dates check the Continuing Education pages.
Johnson County Sexual Assault Response Team
Mobile Clinic
Nursing students involved in Mobile Clinic collaborate with other health science majors on campus (medical, pharmacy, public health students, etc.) to provide comprehensive health care to populations who may otherwise not be able to afford care. There are various clinic days held in surrounding locations throughout the year. The nursing role at these clinics includes taking patient histories, teaching, and other clinic related duties. This is a wonderful opportunity for nursing students to gain experience and confidence with patients and to collaborate with other students on campus -- and fills a needed service to the Iowa City community, as well.
Rural Health Initiative
The Initiated in November 2004, the Rural Hospital Initiative connects Directors of Nursing in Iowa's rural hospitals with nursing leaders at the UI College of Nursing. The goal is to identify the major health issues facing the rural communities and explore ways in which the College can aid and enhance the important work that takes place in hospitals serving our rural populations.
College of Nursing faculty and staff are a consistent resource to our colleagues who provide the vital leadership in the frontline public health institutions of Iowa. As the only state supported College of Nursing, we embrace our mandate to prepare and enhance the current and next generation of nursing leaders.
